• First off, do they even know eachother?
If there's any duelist out there who doesn't know Edo Phoenix (no, Judai is oblivious, so that doesn't count), then they need to be kicked off the show immediately. Edo Phoenix is a duelist of celebrity status and great wealth, so not knowing him would probably make a character look dumb. Johan probably knows Edo, and more than likely admires him along with the rest of the world. He'd probably be ecstatic to duel the Edo Phoenix (just as he had the same enthusiasm with Hell Kaiser). Edo knows Johan, very well. Remember, Edo has a photographic memory, and knows exactly what Pegasus had explained to him back at his first victory in the Industrial Illusions tournament. Maximillion Pegasus is the one who informed Edo of Johan. And besides, if you watch Episode 107, you'd know that Edo was the one who explained Johan's deck and duel spirits indepth to the audience. He also returned to Duel Academia just to see those Jewel Beasts.
• Why is Edo helping Judai save Johan?
He stated it in Episode 144, mentioning that since Judai saved his friend (Saiou Takuma), Edo has to return the favor and help to find Johan. Edo sacrificed himself to aid Judai in the search for Johan. 'Nuff said.
• Have they interacted yet?
Yes.
• What do they have in common?
They're professional duelists. The only thing is, Edo is officially professional. Johan is just the champion from his Academy, but shares the same status. Another common thing between them is their passionate attitude for dueling. It's like, that's where their lives are at.
